I have a background in clinical psychology and health education as well as experience counselling children, teens, students and adults in crisis. I am experienced in helping struggling parents and have been a parenting mentor helping those adjusting to pregnancy to those parenting children of different ages and stages. I have also assisted with groups for anger management, attachment parenting, and bereavement, volunteered on a suicide hotline, and have worked as a trauma therapist for children who have suffered adverse childhood events or abuse.
As I have a broad educational base I am familiar with many counselling methods so can be eclectic in my approach to counselling, allowing the needs of individual clients to inform my practice. I do however favour a solution-focused approach to help clients find a way forward while recognizing the influence of past events. I like to use creative methods in the counselling process, especially in my work with children. I have experience in using Trauma-focussed CBT and Trust-based relational intervention (TBRI) for parenting, which is unique in the island. I am also able to provide group sessions, debriefing and educational training on various aspects of mental health. I have a special interest in crisis intervention and psychological first aid.
I offer a professional and confidential service to both adults and children facing all sorts of life stresses and mental and emotional problems ....
....including stress anxiety and depression, grief, trauma, OCD, problem solving and managing mental health disorders.
I have a Masters degree (MSc) in Clinical Psychology (with counselling) from the University of Texas. I have been certified with the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC) in the USA and am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).
I originally come from a medical background – I gained a Bachelors degree in Nursing Studies and worked as a registered nurse and in health promotion before training as a psychotherapist. I have worked in Guernsey, in the UK, in the USA and on a hospital ship in West Africa. I regularly update my practice with courses and seminars.
I am married to a Guernseyman and am a parent to 4 children. I really enjoy being around children and animals, and I love travel and adventure. I am passionate about helping people find solutions to the things that cause distress and have learnt myself that this journey can often be hard and challenging. Having trustworthy people alongside you who care and support and give you fresh insight is really important.
